CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A driver who fled a traffic stop early Sunday morning apparently crashed his vehicle shortly after. Albemarle County Police are now searching for the suspect around the 3200 block of Scottsville Rd., where the wreck occurred, according to an ACPD release.
The suspect is described as a Black male with dreads, approximately 6-feet tall and 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark clothing, according to ACPD. The search is focused on the area around Scottsville Rd. and Daniel Morris Ln., and the public can expect a large police presence in that area.
An ACPD officer driving near Scottsville Rd. and Mill Creek Dr. spotted the driver going 85-90 mph in a 55 mph speed zone and initiated a traffic stop at approximately 5:37 a.m., according to the release.
There was a brief high speed pursuit that lasted less than three minutes, before the officer terminated the chase.
The vehicle then crashed “a short time later,” according to ACPD. The Charlottesville-UVA-Albemarle Emergency Communications Center received an iPhone crash notification that alerted law enforcement to the wreck. Officers responded and identified the vehicle as the same one that fled the earlier traffic stop.
