(KRON) -- Two six-year-old children suffered serious injuries when they were hit while riding their bikes on Saturday in Half Moon Bay. Sunday, police arrested the driver, who fled the scene.
San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a hit-and-run around 5:45 p.m. in the area of Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue. On the scene, deputies said they found the two children, who had suffered major injuries. They were transported to the hospital for treatment and are reportedly in stable condition.
A witness provided officers with a description of the suspect and vehicle. Deputies, with help from the Daly City Police Department, found the driver, Robert Schumann, 37 of San Francisco, hiding in a nearby wooded area off of Bancroft Avenue.
Police determined Schumann was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and arrested him for DUI causing bodily injury, hit and run resulting in injury, driving with a suspended license with a DUI conviction and operating a vehicle with blood alcohol over .01 on probation.
