A father retrieved a legally secured .40-caliber pistol from his vehicle, entered his children’s Oregon elementary school and fatally shot the gunman as a teacher fought the attacker, Bend Police said Friday.
His family identified the 36-year-old father as Kaylub Giamanco, CBS News reported. His children attend Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, where the shooting unfolded Thursday, October 15.
Inside, a teacher threw her cellphone at the attacker, tackled him and fought to take his shotgun. The father fired multiple times, killing the gunman. The teacher escaped injury, police said.
The attacker still had approximately 44 rounds of 12-gauge ammunition on his body or in a backpack, police said in their October 16 update. Investigators estimate he fired as many as 15 rounds across the incident.
The school resource officer covered several campuses and was at another school when the shooting occurred, Superintendent Steven Cook said at Friday’s briefing, KTVZ reported.
The encounter began around 12:58 p.m. Pacific time Thursday, October 15, when the suspect tossed his shotgun over the school fence and climbed onto campus. A pickup driver confronted him, drawing gunfire that struck the truck at least three times, police said.
The father witnessed that shooting and parked at the school. The gunman shot through the glass panes of exterior double doors and entered a classroom to the left. The father followed through the breached doors. Police said the attacker shot all six victims in that classroom.
Dispatchers received the first 911 call at 12:59 p.m. Officers directed a lockdown at 1:01 p.m. and arrived at 1:02 p.m. Moments later, an officer reported that a community member had shot the suspect.
The gunman killed teacher Megan Lambert, 25, and three boys, ages 5, 8 and 11. Police identified the youngest as Rhoam Summer. The other two boys’ families requested privacy.
A wounded 7-year-old girl remained in serious but stable condition at Oregon Health & Science University, police said in their October 16 update. Wounded teacher Becky Drury, 54, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police identified the suspect as Griffin J. John II, 16, a former Silver Rail student. Investigators were still examining how he obtained the shotgun and ammunition.
In North Texas, Frisco ISD approved a program in May 2025 to place retired law enforcement officers at elementary schools for armed intervention, as The Dallas Express reported.
Bend-La Pine Schools now plans to keep students out of its schools Monday and Tuesday, October 19-20, with most campuses resuming classes October 21. Silver Rail will remain closed until further notice, the district said.
Lambert’s family called the father a hero and wrote in a statement police released: “You selflessly put yourself at risk for others.”
